DARD Rural Safe Routes


Safe Routes to Schools

A total of £1.3 million has been provided for the 18 schools involved in the Sustrans led Rural Safe Routes to Schools project.  Funding partners include the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) with funding provided through the EU Programme for Building Sustainable Prosperity, Department for Regional Development (DRD) Roads Service, Department of Education and Department of the Environment Road Safety Education Branch.
75 rural schools from across Northern Ireland applied to participate in the project.  All applications were assessed and prioritised and the 18 schools listed below are participating in the project:

  • Cloughmills Primary School, Cloughmills
  • Gracehill Primary School, Ballymena
  • Hezlett Primary School, Castlerock
  • Kilbride Primary School, Doagh
  • Killlea Primary School, Armagh
  • Killyleagh Primary School, Killyleagh, Co Down
  • Moneymore Primary School, Moneymore, Magherafelt
  • St Colmcille's Primary School, Claudy
  • St Jarlath's Primary School, Dungannon
  • St John's Primary School, Swatragh
  • St Joseph's Primary School, Bessbrook, Newry
  • St Mary's Primary School, Gortaclea, Cushendall
  • St Mary's Primary School, Lurgan, Craigavon
  • St Patrick's Primary School, Castlederg
  • St Patrick's Primary School, Derrygonnelly
  • Templepatrick Primary School, Ballyclare
Sustrans have appointed two School Travel Advisors to take forward the project with the 18 schools and to liaise with the funding partners.  The project aims to achieve a 10% reduction in car journeys and to increase the numbers of pupils walking and cycling to school by June 2008.  Schools will benefit from a range of measures as appropriate, including:
  • Enhanced signage and road markings outside the school
  • Improved walking and cycling infrastructure
  • Provision of cycle shelters and storage lockers
  • Classroom based education and awareness resources
  • Walking and cycling initiatives
  • Road Safety training
  • Promotion resources and materials
