The journey to work has become increasingly frustrating for all commuters irrespective of how you travel.
Increasing congestion results in longer journey times which imposes costs to businesses and individuals, with traffic growth growing at 3% per year, things can only get worse unless we modify our travel behaviour.
Increased road traffic is detrimental to our environment, poor for our health and augments road casualties.
Travelwise NI is promoting the development of ‘Workplace Travel Plans’. A Workplace Travel Plan focuses on work related transport issues and strategy development to help provide solutions.

Car Sharing
In the UK, we use our cars more than some other European countries. Germany for example has higher car
ownership but less mileage per car. In the UK, 50% of all car journeys are for less than 2 miles, which
suggests we have lost the habit of walking or cycling short journeys – changing this is an opportunity
for improving public health as well as the environment. Short car journeys are also the most damaging
to the environment. Catalytic converters are only effective for journeys over 5km and the first kilometre
produces 60% more fumes.

Travel Plans
A WorkPlace Travel Plan ia a package of measures adopted by an employer to widen travel choice – primarily
aimed at commuters but also covering business travel and visitors.
