Car Sharing
What is Car Sharing?
Car sharing is when two or more people share a car and travel together. It allows
people to benefit from the convenience of the car, whilst alleviating the associated problems of congestion
and pollution.
You can share a car for any journey - getting to work, doing the weekly shop, taking
the children to school, going to the match at the weekend, travelling to a festival, event or show,
getting to or from university, visiting friends or getting to the airport.
Did you know that over half the vehicles on our roads at peak times contain just
one person?
Travelwise NI can provide information and practical advice on car sharing.
Understand the problem and you can be part of the solution.
Car Sharing benefits
- Reduced travel costs
- Reduced congestion
- Reduced pollution
- Reduced carbon dioxide emissions
How does Car Sharing work?
- Find two or more people who travel the same or similar route to work as you. Team up and travel together in the same car.
- You can also include non-drivers and non-car owners who can arrange lifts to work with their colleagues.
- You can take driving in turns - it doesn't have to be the same person driving every day.
- Share fuel and parking costs equally.
- You don't have to participate in a car-sharing scheme everyday but when you do, it will make an immediate difference to your journey.
- You can car-share for multi-purpose journeys, where the journey to work could be combined with the journey to school, travel to reach public transport and so on.
- Travelwise NI has recently introduced a car-share scheme for the NICS. This was launched in June 2005 and has proven to be very popular with nearly 900 Civil Servants already registered. The scheme will be offered to hospitals, universities and large non-Government organisations throughout Northern Ireland. For additional information, please visit www.carshareni.com
